Starting Your Humidor
|
So you've acquired your own humidor and want to know what to do next?
Below are a few pointers to keep your humidor up and running for years to come.
In general, keep your humidor in a spot away from direct sunlight and other heat sources and try not to open up your humidor too much.
ALWAYS use distilled water or a mixture called Cigar Fresh (50% propylene glycol and 50% distilled water). I can't stress how very important this is. Use tap water, brita water, spring water for recharging or starting your humidor will clog up the humidor pores and ruin your humidifier.
Remove all cigars and humidfier. If you have a removable hygrometer remove it aswell. Do not put the cigars back in until at least 6-8 hour after wetting down your humidor.
Remove your hygrometer and humidifier.
Using a clean sponge or spritzer bottle, wet down the inside Spanish cedar until the cedar looks wet.
Wipe away any excess water.
Put the hygrometer and hydrometer back in the humidor and close the box for 6-8 hours.
If the Spnaish cedar has returned to the original colour and your hygrometer is reading between 60 - 75 degrees you can now put back your cigars.

Recharging Your Humidifier
|
- Remove your humidifier from your humidor.
- Soak the humidifier into a glass of distilled water for approximately 10 minutes.
- Take out and wipe off any excess water.
- You can also use the Cigar Fresh straight from the bottle forced into your humidifer.
- Replace back into your humidor.

Use Of Your Hygrometer (analog)
|
Although I highly recommend using a digital hygrometer over an analog hygrometer, below is a way you can recalibrate your analog.
- Remove your analog hygrometer and place in a wet cloth for 1 hour.
- After 1 hour the hygrometer should read between 95% and 100% humidity.
- If you have an adjustable hygrometer and the unit is not reading at least 95% humidity after 1 hour you will have to adjust it.
- If your analog is adjustable you can insert a small screw driver into the screw at the back and turn until it reads between 95% and 100%.
You should allow approximately 6-8 hours for the reading to be accurate.
